Where Sculpture Meets Function

Silent Escarpment is conceived not as a conventional piece of furniture, but as a functional sculptural object.

Its broad upper plane appears to emerge naturally from an irregular rock-like body, while the mass beneath narrows, recedes and expands in different directions. The resulting silhouette recalls a fragment of landscape shaped slowly by erosion — solid and grounded, yet visually suspended in places.

Rather than assigning the piece a single function, the design leaves its role deliberately open. It may become a sculptural table, a compact presentation surface, a display pedestal, a small hospitality counter, or simply an independent art object within an interior.

Its function changes with the space around it.

Design Concept & Inspiration

Inspired by Landscapes Shaped Over Time

The form takes inspiration from exposed cliffs and weathered rock formations, where wind, water and time gradually remove material and leave behind unexpected projections, recesses and softened transitions.

Instead of reproducing a particular natural stone, Silent Escarpment interprets this geological process through proportion and form.

The upper surface extends outward like an exposed rock shelf, while the body beneath appears partially eroded away. Uneven planes, shallow depressions and irregular contours create a sense that the object was discovered rather than designed.

The contrast between the relatively calm upper plane and the more expressive sculpted body is intentional. It gives the piece enough usable surface to function within a space while preserving the character of a naturally formed object.

Surface Character

Refined Above, Raw Below

The upper surface is smoother than the sculpted body, but it is intentionally not perfectly polished or mechanically flat in appearance.

Subtle handmade variation remains visible across the surface, allowing light to move softly rather than reflect from a completely uniform plane.

Around the perimeter, the upper surface does not terminate in a sharp, artificial edge. Instead, its contours gradually merge into the rougher stone-like sides, creating a more believable transition between the functional surface and the sculptural body.

The sides retain irregular depressions, fractured textures and softened erosion marks, producing the visual depth associated with naturally weathered stone.

Material & Craftsmanship

Stone Character Without Solid Stone

Silent Escarpment is not carved from natural stone.

It is produced using JART TEAM's engineered FRP-based composite material system, incorporating resin, glass fiber, mineral fillers and selected aggregates according to the structural and surface requirements of the piece.

The form is developed through a combination of sculptural modeling, mold-making, composite forming and extensive hand finishing.

After the main structure is formed, the surface is shaped, refined and finished by hand to build variations in depth, texture and tonal character. This process allows the piece to achieve the visual presence of weathered stone while providing greater flexibility in weight, proportion and fabrication than a comparable block of solid stone.

Because much of the final character is created by hand, subtle variations between individual pieces are part of the design rather than manufacturing defects.

An Object Without a Fixed Role

One Form, Different Possibilities

Silent Escarpment is designed to remain deliberately adaptable.

Depending on the scale and surrounding environment, it can function as:

• a sculptural table or occasional surface
• a display pedestal for objects, floral arrangements or artworks
• a compact presentation or hospitality surface
• an architectural focal point in a lobby, boutique or gallery
• a stand-alone sculptural object

This openness allows the piece to sit somewhere between furniture, sculpture and spatial installation, rather than belonging entirely to any one category.
